Israeli security forces announced Thursday the arrest of Behrouz Sobirgon, a national of Tajikistan holding a Russian passport, on suspicion of performing security tasks for Iranian intelligence. According to a joint statement from the Shin Bet, the Ministry of Defense, and the Israel Police, Sobirgon was arrested in June 2026 after allegedly maintaining contact with an Iranian agent since January. A prosecutor's statement was filed today in the Tel Aviv District Court ahead of a formal indictment.

The investigation, conducted by the Shin Bet and the Erezim unit of the Ministry of Defense (MALMAB), revealed that Sobirgon's primary activities took place during Operation Roaring Lion. Authorities allege that the suspect sought to assist Iran in achieving operational gains against Israel by providing real-time intelligence from within the country. According to the findings, the contact began with a seemingly innocent job offer, which Sobirgon reportedly continued even after realizing the employer was an Iranian agent.

His tasks included documenting and transmitting the locations of Iranian missile impacts during the conflict, providing coordinates for the Azrieli Towers in Tel Aviv, and photographing the Haifa port. He also allegedly attempted to photograph a sensitive security facility in northern Israel and actively assisted in recruiting additional individuals for Iranian missions. This arrest follows a series of recent cases involving suspected Iranian recruitment of foreign and local individuals for espionage. Security officials emphasized that enemy intelligence agencies continue to use social media and deceptive job offers to recruit assets. The state is seeking to detain Sobirgon until the end of legal proceedings, citing the severity of the security offenses and the ongoing threat posed by such recruitment efforts.
