TL;DR

Only one in ten respondents across 15 European countries view the United States as a reliable ally, according to a European Council on Foreign Relations poll published in The Guardian. A majority questioned whether Washington would come to their aid in the event of an attack, amid ongoing US-Iran hostilities in the Gulf.

01 · THE DISPATCH

The European Council on Foreign Relations survey, published Wednesday in The Guardian, interviewed respondents in 15 EU and non-EU European countries between late May and early June, as the US-Iran military confrontation escalated. The poll found that trust in America's security commitment has eroded sharply, with a median of only 10% naming the US as an ally. Majorities in several countries — including Germany, France, and Italy — expressed doubt that Washington would defend them if attacked. The findings reflect European anxiety over US reliability during a regional crisis that has seen Iran launch ballistic missiles at US bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan, and the US strike targets inside Iran. As The Zioneer has reported, the crisis began June 9 when the IRGC downed a US Army Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a cycle of strikes and retaliation. The poll suggests the confrontation is eroding European confidence in the transatlantic security framework.
