01 · THE DISPATCH

Iranian government spokeswoman Fatima Mohajerani announced Wednesday evening that Tehran will be closed on Tuesday, July 7, to facilitate the departure of mourners traveling to Mashhad for the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. A national day of mourning will be observed on Thursday, July 9, the day of the leader's burial in Mashhad.

The announcement follows an earlier decision by the Iranian Civil Aviation Authority to close Tehran's airspace on Monday, July 6, during the funeral ceremonies. The Zioneer has reported extensively on the preparations, including the burial in Mashhad on July 9 and the planned funeral procession in Iraq on July 8–9.

The closure of the city and the national mourning day underscore the scale of the planned state funeral for Khamenei, who was eliminated four months ago. The government has been coordinating logistics for a massive turnout of mourners from across the country.
