The Shafdan (national wastewater treatment system) will connect to Samaria communities for the first time next week, ending reliance on the local Barkin facility. The 136 million shekel project was spearheaded by Samaria Council head Yossi Dagan over nine years. Minister Eli Cohen called it a 'historic project'; Dagan said it upgrades quality of life 'on the way to a million residents.'
The Shafdan (Dan Region Wastewater Treatment Plant) will connect to Samaria communities for the first time next week, under a 136 million shekel infrastructure project announced Monday evening. The connection ends the reliance of Samaria towns on the local Barkin wastewater treatment facility. In the first phase, the 'Gush Ma'arava' bloc of communities will be connected; several weeks later, the town of Barkin and the 'Gush Kana' bloc will follow. The project caps a nine-year effort by Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan. Minister Eli Cohen (Economy) called it a 'historic project.' Dagan said the connection upgrades quality of life in the region, which he said is 'on the way to a million residents.' As The Zioneer previously reported, Dagan had been advancing a separate plan for 18 new settlements in northern Samaria, which won bipartisan congressional support during a Washington conference in June. The wastewater connection is a separate but complementary infrastructure step for the council's development vision.
