Israel's Labor Court issued a preliminary ruling recognizing the independent teachers' organization 'Morim Movshim Shinu'i' (Teachers Leading Change) as a workers' union, breaking the long-standing monopoly of the established teachers' unions. The court rejected objections from the teachers' union Histadrut, which had challenged the new group's independence. The new union allows teachers to opt out of compulsory union dues to the older organizations.
The Tel Aviv Labor Court on Wednesday delivered a preliminary ruling recognizing 'Morim Movshim Shinu'i' (Teachers Leading Change) as a workers' organization, in what supporters describe as a historic break with the monopoly of the established teachers' unions.
The court rejected procedural objections filed by the Israel Teachers' Union (Histadrut HaMorim), which had argued that the new body lacked independence and authenticity. The Teachers' Union — backed by its own legal team and significant resources — had sought to join the legal proceedings to block recognition.
According to a social-media account by the new organization's management, the ruling means teachers who join 'Morim Movshim Shinu'i' will not be forced to pay compulsory union dues to the older organizations. The group campaigns on a platform of transparency, democracy, and prioritizing students' and national interests.
The Education Ministry, which the group says remained neutral in principle, had reportedly allowed the teachers' union to join the case. The ruling is preliminary and subject to appeal to the National Labor Court. The new union's leaders have called on teachers to join, aiming for 10,000–50,000 members.
As The Zioneer previously reported (June 15), allegations of fabrication by the teachers' union had been circulating online, though that post was anonymous and its specific claims remain unverified. Today's court ruling is a concrete legal development separate from those allegations.
