President Karol Nawrocki vetoed two bills that would have allowed unmarried couples, including same-sex partners, to enter into civil agreements. The veto was supported by all coalition parties, but Nawrocki said the bills go too far and would harm the constitutional institution of marriage.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki on Friday vetoed two bills that sought to expand the legal rights of unmarried couples, including same-sex partners. The bills, titled 'Status of the closest person in a relationship' and 'Agreement on shared life,' would have allowed two adults to sign a civil agreement regulating various civil issues for unmarried couples. The proposed legislation had the support of all coalition parties, including the conservative PSL party, which had previously opposed similar initiatives. However, Nawrocki, an ally of the nationalist opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, argued that the bills would undermine the institution of marriage as defined in Article 18 of the Polish constitution, which states that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. Nawrocki stated, 'As someone entrusted with upholding the constitution, I cannot accept a solution that would lead to harming the special status of the institution of marriage.'
The veto is the latest in a series of conservative moves by Nawrocki. As The Zioneer previously reported, earlier this month he called for a ban on the flag of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists-Ukrainian Insurgent Army (OUN-UPA), comparing it to a Nazi slogan. The bills' fate remains uncertain; the parliament could potentially override the veto with a three-fifths majority, but it is unclear if the coalition can muster the necessary votes.
