Jerusalem is a city in the Judean Hills, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a place of central religious significance to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Israel designates Jerusalem as its capital and the seat of its government, parliament (the Knesset), and supreme court. The city's status is among the most contested issues in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict: Palestinians seek the eastern part of the city as the capital of a future state, and most of the international community does not recognise the full city as Israel's capital, though some governments have moved their embassies there. The Old City contains sites sacred to all three Abrahamic faiths, including the Western Wall, the Temple Mount and Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. As Israel's seat of government and a focal point of religion and identity, Jerusalem appears frequently in political and security coverage, from parliamentary affairs and diplomacy to questions of access and sovereignty over its holy sites.
