Ariel Kahana criticizes opposition leaders for silence on Netanyahu trial

TL;DR

Israel Hayom commentator Ariel Kahana said Monday that not a single opposition leader has dared to state the obvious about the Netanyahu trial, calling for the prosecution to reexamine its position. Kahana singled out Gadi Eisenkot, chair of Yashar, arguing that if Eisenkot criticizes Netanyahu for political considerations regarding the war, consistency demands he also confront the trial's bribery charge, which Kahana says cannot lead to a conviction.

01 · THE DISPATCH

Israel Hayom commentator Ariel Kahana published a sharp critique Monday evening, accusing opposition leaders of cowardice for failing to state publicly that the Netanyahu trial's bribery charge is unsustainable.

Kahana focused on Gadi Eisenkot, chair of the centrist-right Yashar party, who has frequently accused Netanyahu of prolonging the war for political reasons and of failing to reach a hostage deal. 'Not one opposition leader dares to say the obvious about the Netanyahu trial. Even Eisenkot doesn't dare to say what the 'straight path' required at this time — at the very least, to call on the prosecution to reexamine its position,' Kahana wrote.

He argued that without the bribery charge — which he claimed will not result in a conviction — Netanyahu would not have been indicted at all. Kahana contrasted Eisenkot's willingness to ascribe political motives to Netanyahu on war policy with his silence on the trial, asking: 'Is it possible he is weighing political considerations regarding the Netanyahu trial? One who walks straight should do so without calculation.'

Kahana added that he has no expectations from former opposition figures Avigdor Liberman, Naftali Bennett, or Yair Lapid.
