Surgeons at Beilinson Hospital removed the front of a woman's chest wall due to a rare sternum cancer and reconstructed it with a custom 3D-printed implant. The hospital said it is preparing a similar procedure for a 15-year-old patient with a pelvic tumor.
In a first for Israel, surgeons at Beilinson Hospital (Rabin Medical Center) performed a full chest wall reconstruction using a personalized 3D-printed implant for a woman in her twenties with an exceptionally rare cancer of the sternum. The custom implant, made of a specialized polymer, was designed to match the patient's anatomy to millimeter precision and to allow her own tissue to grow into it over time. The hospital announced that it is now preparing a similar procedure for a 15-year-old cancer patient, using a 3D-printed implant to replace nearly half of his pelvis. The surgeries highlight the hospital's advanced capabilities in personalized surgical oncology.
