A HaKrayot Magistrate's Court judge on Sunday rejected a police request to extend the detention of five young men arrested in Kiryat Haim on suspicion of assaulting officers and helping a suspect evade arrest. The judge ruled that video footage presented did not show a physical attempt to assault the officers. The five, including two soldiers and a minor, were released to house arrest until Tuesday.
The arrests occurred earlier Sunday, as N12 reported, when police detained the individuals after they allegedly tried to prevent the arrest of a friend wanted for questioning over a criminal shooting and arson incident. During the operation, several men surrounded undercover officers and attempted to pull the suspect from a police vehicle. Police had requested a longer remand, but the judge found insufficient evidence to support the assault allegations. The case remains under investigation.
