TL;DR

A court is set to rule today on whether the Ramat Hasharon municipality must begin issuing fines to businesses operating on Shabbat at the Big Glilot mall in the Glilot area, after Channel 14 reports that despite the Interior Ministry's demand for enforcement, no fines have been issued so far and stores continue to operate normally.

01 · THE DISPATCH

A Tel Aviv court is scheduled to rule today on a petition regarding Shabbat enforcement at the Big Glilot commercial center in the Glilot area, north of Tel Aviv. According to a report by Channel 14, despite a directive from the Interior Ministry to impose fines on businesses opening on Shabbat, no actual enforcement has been carried out on the ground, and stores continue to operate as usual. The court will now decide whether Ramat Hasharon municipality must begin issuing citations.

As The Zioneer reported last week, Interior Ministry Director-General Israel Ozen called to prohibit the mall's Shabbat operation, following a letter sent to the municipality demanding enforcement of the existing bylaw. The court ruling today could set a precedent for similar struggles across the country between religious and secular norms regarding public observance of Shabbat.
