The Zioneer reported earlier today that Greece's top security council was expected to approve a €3 billion Israeli air defense package. Now, detailed reports specify the program, dubbed "Achilles' Shield," will combine Rafael's SPYDER All-in-One and David's Sling with Israel Aerospace Industries' Barak MX, linking interceptors, radars, sensors and command systems to defend Greek islands, the mainland and critical infrastructure from ballistic missiles, aircraft, cruise missiles and drones.
Athens is also expected to advance V-BAT and Israeli Heron armed drones, special-operations submarines and new C-390 transport aircraft. Israeli defense officials are reportedly preparing to travel to Athens to finalize the government-to-government contracts.
Greek officials describe the project as protection against modern threats, but its strategic direction is unmistakable: Greece is racing to counter Turkey amid longstanding disputes over Aegean airspace, maritime borders and Eastern Mediterranean energy resources.
