Israel Hayom columnist: Netanyahu's call for broad government is a welcome shift

TL;DR

Israel Hayom political commentator Ariel Kahana says that Prime Minister Netanyahu's recognition that a broad government is needed is a welcome development, and that his clear statement against civil war is very important. Kahana adds that Ben Gvir's sharp criticism of the unity call may be driven by electoral calculations: he could draw right-wing voters opposed to unity away from Likud.

01 · THE DISPATCH

Israel Hayom political commentator and columnist Ariel Kahana offered an analysis of Prime Minister Netanyahu's Saturday evening statement in which he called for forming a broad national government and warned against forces seeking to tear the nation apart.

Kahana described the PM's recognition that a broad coalition is needed as "a welcome development" and his opposition to civil war as "very important." He noted that Israel faces enormous challenges that require shared efforts.

On National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir's quick criticism of the unity call, Kahana assessed that the criticism may be politically motivated: Ben Gvir could draw right-wing voters who oppose unity away from Likud. Kahana also noted that Ben Gvir knows Netanyahu would be happy to get rid of him if he could.

As The Zioneer reported on Saturday evening, Netanyahu explicitly said he intends to form a broad national government and called for an end to boycotts, while Ben Gvir attacked the move as paralyzing right-wing policy.

Kahana's piece did not express a personal opinion on how Netanyahu should proceed, but suggested that after the next elections, assuming it is Netanyahu's last term, he might be able to forgo his 'natural partners' in favor of unity.
