Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity and Water confirmed that the power and desalination plant was attacked by Iran for the second time in two days, causing a fire and damaging generation units, according to the ministry.
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity and Water officially confirmed Sunday that Iran struck the country's main power and desalination plant for the second time in two days, reporting a fire and damage to electricity generation units. The confirmation provides the government's direct attribution of the attack to Iran, following a series of reports earlier in the day.
At 12:07 Jerusalem, Israeli media outlet ynet reported that the facility had been attacked twice in two days, without identifying the attacker. Shortly after, N12 reported that Kuwaiti authorities stated the facility was attacked again, but the attacker was not identified. Then, Abu Ali Express reported that the Kuwaiti Energy Ministry confirmed fire and damage to numerous production units. The current official confirmation from the Ministry of Electricity and Water now provides the government's direct attribution of the attack to Iran.
The attack is part of a broader Iranian campaign against Gulf energy infrastructure, as The Zioneer has reported in the context of US airstrikes on Iranian military targets in southern Iran and assessments of Iran's efforts to disrupt regional energy supplies. Iran has also been accused of attacks on shipping and infrastructure in the Strait of Hormuz area.
It remains unclear how many generation units were damaged and the extent of the fire, as well as whether Iran will carry out further strikes. No group has claimed responsibility, but the Kuwaiti government has attributed the attack to Iran.
