The mayor of the Christian town of Rmeish in southern Lebanon on Sunday night rejected reports that he or other Christian communities had asked to join Israel, calling the notion 'completely impossible'.
The mayor of the Christian town of Rmeish in southern Lebanon on Sunday night categorically denied reports that Christian communities in the area had sought annexation to Israel. "Even the thought of such a thing is completely impossible," he said.
The denial follows a series of reports. The Zioneer reported earlier on Sunday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News that some Lebanese Christian villages had asked to be annexed by Israel. Prior to that, journalist Tamir Morag reported that Christian leaders representing some 20,000 residents had requested annexation and citizenship. The mayor's statement directly contradicts those accounts.
It remains unclear whether the request was made by other local leaders or whether the mayor's denial reflects the official position of all Christian towns in the area.
