01 · THE DISPATCH

The Movement for Quality of Government (התנועה לאיכות השלטון) has formally demanded that prosecutors open a criminal investigation into Shin Bet Director David Zini on suspicion of breach of trust. The demand relates to two matters: Zini's meeting with political commentator Yaakov Bardugo, and the handling of an investigation into an alleged leak of classified information to Channel 12, according to Channel 12.

The request adds to an expanding public debate over Zini's conduct as head of the Shin Bet. In recent weeks, The Zioneer has reported on multiple calls for scrutiny: dozens of LGBTQ and civil society groups urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to review Zini's conduct (June 26); right-wing Channel 14 called for a probe, accusing Zini of fabricating an investigation (June 30); and Justice Minister Yariv Levin urged President Herzog to back Zini (July 8). Bardugo himself, after being caught in a falsehood, also demanded a probe of Zini (June 30). The Movement for Quality of Government, a prominent watchdog, now seeks a formal criminal investigation, marking a significant escalation.

It remains unclear whether the attorney general or law enforcement will act on the demand. The Shin Bet has not publicly commented on the new request.
