The President's Residence says it has received only Defense Minister Israel Katz's opinion on Elor Azaria's request to expunge his criminal record, and is awaiting further opinions from security establishment bodies including the IDF. Once all opinions are in, President Isaac Herzog will weigh the request, the office stated Tuesday morning.
The President's Residence issued a statement Tuesday morning clarifying the status of Elor Azaria's request to have his criminal record expunged. According to the statement, only Defense Minister Israel Katz's opinion has been received so far; the office is still awaiting opinions from other relevant security establishment bodies, including the IDF. Once all opinions are in, President Isaac Herzog will consider the request.
As The Zioneer reported earlier Tuesday, the IDF has expressed opposition to the expungement. Defense Minister Katz had previously indicated he was leaning toward recommending the move, according to a Channel 14 report on Monday. Azaria, a former Kfir Brigade soldier, was convicted of manslaughter in 2016 for neutralizing an already-wounded Palestinian attacker in Hebron, and served nine months of an 18-month sentence.
