IDF
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is the national military of the State of Israel, tasked with defending its sovereignty and citizens across land, sea, and air. Established in 1948, it is a conscript-based force with a vital reserve component, currently engaged in a direct high-intensity confrontation with the Iranian regime and its regional proxies.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was established on May 26, 1948, consolidating pre-state paramilitary groups into a unified national command. Operating under the civilian authority of the Israeli government and led by the Chief of the General Staff, the IDF's doctrine emphasizes rapid mobilization of reserves and maintaining qualitative superiority to counter regional threats. Since the Hamas-led massacre of October 7, 2023, the IDF has maintained a sustained wartime footing, which escalated in June 2026 into a direct confrontation with the Iranian regime. Following massive ballistic missile barrages launched by the IRGC on June 7-8, 2026, the IDF launched Operation Roaring Lion, targeting strategic Iranian assets including air defense systems and the Mahshahr Petrochemical Complex. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has led this transition from proxy-based containment to direct deterrence. While direct strikes on Iran were temporarily suspended in mid-June 2026 following U.S. diplomatic intervention, the IDF maintains high-intensity operations in Lebanon and Samaria. In southern Lebanon, the 769th Regional Brigade recently completed a significant raid in the village of Dibbine, destroying Hezbollah weapons depots and eliminating over 30 operatives. Simultaneously, the military is shifting its posture in northern Samaria toward establishing permanent outposts within refugee camps to ensure long-term security control. Internally, the IDF faces ongoing social challenges, including tensions over female integration in the Armored Corps, which has prompted friction with some religious leadership. Despite these internal and diplomatic pressures, the IDF remains on high alert for independent action against the Iranian nuclear threat if regional negotiations fail to meet Israel's security requirements.
