Tehran water utility warns of 200 million cubic meter shortage, urges conservation

TL;DR

The spokesman for Tehran's water utility said the city faces a 200-million-cubic-meter deficit relative to required water reserves, after five consecutive years of drought have sharply depleted groundwater stocks. He said the authorities aim to install water-saving equipment in 1.5 million housing units over the next year, a move that would affect about 5 million residents. Each household conserving 40 liters daily would save about 73 million cubic meters annually, he said, calling for immediate public involvement.

01 · THE DISPATCH

The spokesman for the Tehran Province Water Company warned on Sunday that the capital faces a structural water deficit of about 200 million cubic meters relative to required reserves, after five consecutive years of drought have depleted groundwater stocks. He said the authorities aim to install water-saving equipment in 1.5 million housing units over the next year, a step expected to affect about 5 million residents, and estimated that each household reducing its daily consumption by 40 liters would save roughly 73 million cubic meters annually.

This is not the first time in recent weeks that Iranian water authorities have appealed to the public. As The Zioneer reported on June 17, the head of the Tehran Province Water Company called on residents to cut daily per-person consumption by 65 liters — from about 195 to 130 liters — and expressed cautious optimism that a summer crisis could be avoided. Sunday's statement frames the shortage as more acute, with a clear numeric deficit and an explicit call for immediate public action.

The strain on Iran's water infrastructure comes amid broader pressures. As The Zioneer previously noted in related reports, Iran's energy and water systems have faced cumulative stress from years of drought, sanctions, and infrastructure underinvestment, and more recently from direct strikes on energy infrastructure during the ongoing conflict. The summer months are expected to test the system further.
