A Wall Street Journal investigation reveals that Iranian strikes between late February and June caused far more extensive damage to Naval Support Activity Bahrain than previously acknowledged, with some facilities now unusable. Reconstruction costs are estimated at $400 million, with the total expected to be far higher, prompting the Pentagon to reassess its force posture across the Middle East.
A Wall Street Journal investigation published Friday reveals that the damage inflicted by Iranian strikes on the US Navy's 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain between late February and June 2026 was far more severe than publicly acknowledged.
According to the investigation, the strikes hit the 5th Fleet's command building, satellite communications facilities, warehouses, residential quarters, and other structures at Naval Support Activity Bahrain. Some facilities are now unusable. The reconstruction cost for damaged structures alone is estimated at $400 million, with the full expense expected to be far higher. More than 20 other US installations across the Middle East also sustained damage in the same period.
The extent of the damage has led the Pentagon to reconsider its regional force posture. Options under review include reducing the US presence in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, moving some military capabilities westward — out of range of Iranian missiles and drones — constructing underground command facilities, and potentially transferring certain capabilities to Israel in the future.
As The Zioneer has reported extensively since June 10, satellite imagery and visual evidence confirmed direct hits on the 5th Fleet compound, a radar site on Jabal ad Dukhan, and fuel storage at Sheikh Isa Air Base. The WSJ investigation provides the first comprehensive damage assessment based on internal sources and site inspection. The Pentagon has not publicly commented on the new figures.
