Democrats party leader Yair Golan said Wednesday that police violence is always wrong, but while Ben-Gvir encouraged it against hostage deal protesters, he now calls for restraint when the crowd enjoys political immunity, according to N12.
Yair Golan, chair of the opposition Democrats party, released a statement Wednesday morning responding to the violent police dispersal of a protest at the Geha Interchange. Golan said that police violence is inherently illegitimate, regardless of the target. He recalled that when protesters for the hostages and against the judicial overhaul were beaten and dragged bleeding in the streets, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir encouraged and backed the violence. Now, Golan said, when the protest involves a public that enjoys political immunity from the government, Ben-Gvir suddenly remembers to speak about restraint and proportionality. Golan did not specify which protest or which crowd he was referring to in the second part of his remarks.
As The Zioneer reported on Monday, Golan had previously called on Police Commissioner Danny Levi to summon Chief Superintendent Doron for a hearing, saying Ben-Gvir's police had lost restraint. In that earlier statement, Golan also promised that in the next government his party would take over the Public Security Ministry.
