Muhammad Abu Afash was a senior operative within the military apparatus of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), a radical Islamist organization and Iranian proxy dedicated to the destruction of Israel. Abu Afash's operational focus was centered on Gaza City and the northern regions of the Gaza Strip, where PIJ maintains a significant presence alongside Hamas. On June 6, 2026, Abu Afash was killed during a precision strike conducted by an Israeli unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The strike targeted a tent in the al-Jawazat area of western Gaza City. According to reports from Gazan sources, the strike occurred while Abu Afash was attending a leadership meeting with other high-ranking PIJ commanders. He was eliminated alongside three other prominent figures: Farhat Harara, Abdullah Kadoum (the commander of PIJ's anti-tank array), and Naim al-Sarsawi. The elimination of these commanders represents a significant blow to the PIJ's command and control structure in northern Gaza, occurring amidst ongoing IDF operations to dismantle terror infrastructure in the region. Abu Afash's role in the organization was part of a broader network of commanders responsible for coordinating attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF forces. His elimination is consistent with Israel's security-first policy of targeting the leadership of adversarial groups to degrade their operational capabilities and restore regional stability.
