The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Friday evening the elimination of Hassan Mahmoud Sayyam, a Hamas military commander who participated in the October 7 massacre and was directly involved in holding several Israeli hostages in Gaza.
The IDF announced that Hassan Mahmoud Sayyam was targeted and killed in an airstrike earlier this week in the Gaza City area. According to military intelligence, Sayyam was a commander within the Hamas military wing who infiltrated Israel during the October 7 terror attacks. During the course of the war, he was responsible for holding hostages Amit Soussana, Keith Siegel, Aviva Siegel, and Dafna Elyakim.
Operational Details
A second Hamas operative, identified as Adham Subhi Salim Ziara, was also eliminated in a separate strike in Gaza City this week. The IDF stated that both terrorists had recently been involved in firing at Israeli forces and planting explosive devices in the vicinity of the "Yellow Line." The strikes were carried out by the Air Force to remove immediate threats to troops operating in the sector.
Context and Hostage Status
The naming of the specific hostages held by Sayyam provides further clarity on the conditions of captivity for those seized from their homes nearly a year ago. Amit Soussana, Aviva Siegel, and Dafna Elyakim were released during the hostage exchange deal in November 2023, while Keith Siegel remains in Hamas captivity. This elimination follows a pattern of targeted operations against the "Shadow Unit" and other Hamas cadres responsible for the management of Israeli captives, as The Zioneer has previously reported regarding similar strikes against hostage-holders in Nuseirat and central Gaza.
Southern Command forces remain deployed in the area and continue to operate against terror infrastructure and operatives involved in the October 7 atrocities. The Zioneer will continue to follow official updates regarding the status of the remaining hostages.
