Overnight into Thursday, 16 of the women affected by the carbon monoxide poisoning at a hair salon in East Jerusalem's A-Tur neighborhood were treated in the hyperbaric chamber at Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital and remain hospitalized in stable condition, according to a report by Inbar Twizer on N12. Some are expected to be discharged later today. The development follows the initial incident Wednesday evening, when 18 women were poisoned and three suspects were detained.
Reports from Wednesday evening evolved rapidly. At 16:39 Jerusalem, initial reports indicated 16 women were evacuated unconscious from the scene amid fears of a hazardous materials incident. Within the same hour, Magen David Adom (MDA) confirmed carbon monoxide poisoning and reported 17 women rescued. The Fire Department identified an illegal generator connection as the cause of the toxic gas leak. The casualty count was revised several times, with some agencies reporting 12 women affected, before settling at 18 women — 12 in moderate condition and six in light condition — by the end of the evening. The three suspects were detained for questioning.
As The Zioneer reported Wednesday evening, the poisonings occurred at a hair salon in A-Tur, and the Jerusalem Fire and Rescue Service noted that the situation could have ended in a severe disaster. The investigation into the incident continues.
No further details have been released on the condition of the two women who were not among the 16 treated in the hyperbaric chamber. The legal status of the three suspects remains under investigation.
