A drone researcher published a pointed analysis of Chief of Staff Zamir's announcement establishing an independent robotics and drone corps, warning it could become a fiasco unless three conditions are met: organizational independence from the air force; emulating the Engineering Corps' hands-on field model; and empowering reservists who built capabilities under operational pressure, not sidelining them by bureaucracy.
In a detailed assessment published Monday evening, a drone researcher (cited only as such) analyzed Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir's announcement establishing an independent robotics and drone corps, to be headed by a brigadier general, with the stated goal of global leadership in attack and defense across all dimensions.
The researcher — a self-described drone researcher — argued that the path to a fiasco is very short, and laid out three conditions for the project to be genuine rather than a media exercise: (1) the corps must remain independent and not be subordinated to the air force, whose doctrine prioritizes aircraft over autonomous systems; (2) the Engineering Corps showed the way by building field capabilities without asking permission — no PPTs, just operations — and that model must be followed; (3) reservists from elite units (BLR, Matzpan, and Padam — tracking, cyber, and computing units) who built capabilities from scratch under operational pressure are the real asset. Any ego that blocks them from leading will kill the project at birth.
The researcher concluded by stating the test will be simple: how long until the corps actually operates something in the field. If in a year it is still in the stage of defining founding documents, all will be clear.
As The Zioneer reported earlier Monday, Zamir announced the establishment of the corps, marking the first time the IDF has created a new corps amidst active combat.
