01 · THE DISPATCH

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara notified the High Court of Justice on Sunday evening that she will not defend the appointment of Yehuda Eliyahu as Director General of the Israel Land Authority (Rami). According to the legal filing, she cited "a multitude of defects in the search and appointment process" that she believes warrant the appointment's annulment.

Baharav-Miara approved separate external legal representation for the government, handled by attorney Doron Taubman, who previously represented the state in the High Court petition on military draft exemptions for yeshiva students. The hearing originally scheduled for Wednesday was postponed to next Sunday.

As The Zioneer reported on June 22, the Attorney General's Office had earlier signaled it would recommend disqualifying Eliyahu's appointment. The High Court had issued a conditional order (order nisi) against the appointment on June 17, setting a date for the state to show cause. Sunday evening's development represents the Attorney General's formal position. The specific procedural defect cited involves a claim that a member of the search committee had ties to the Housing Ministry.
