National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir is considering removing the commander of the Bnei Brak-Ramat Gan police station from the Israel Police, following footage that appears to show him using excessive force against a Haredi protester on Highway 4 last week, Channel 12 reported Tuesday morning.
The incident is the latest in a series of developments following clashes between police and Haredi demonstrators on Highway 4 last Wednesday. As The Zioneer reported, the Bnei Brak-Ramat Gan station commander, Deputy Superintendent Yuval Shavit, was identified by protesters as the officer seen dragging a demonstrator near Bnei Brak. Police Commissioner Danny Levi subsequently suspended an officer who kicked a protester, and several officers were transferred for investigation by the Justice Ministry's Police Internal Investigations Department (Mahash).
Ben Gvir, who has positioned himself as a critic of police conduct during the Haredi protests, said Wednesday he spoke with Levi to examine restricting or removing stun grenades from police use. The current move targets a senior officer in charge of the station that handled the protest route.
The police and Shavit have not yet issued a formal response to the minister's statement, which has not been independently verified by authorities.
