TL;DR

At the Herzliya Conference at Reichman University, Eyal Ashel — whose daughter observer Roni Ashel fell on October 7 — stated that the Gaza Division intelligence officer still serves in the military. Ashel said that officer knew a great deal, in his assessment far more than Aharon Haliva (former head of Aman), was privy to the details, and took no action.

01 · THE DISPATCH

Eyal Ashel, whose daughter observer Roni Ashel fell at the Nahal Oz outpost on October 7, spoke Wednesday at the Herzliya Conference at Reichman University. Ashel noted that the Gaza Division intelligence officer (he used the acronym "Kamnan Ha'Ugda") still serves in the IDF and questioned what that officer is doing in the military. According to Ashel, the officer knew a great deal — in his assessment far more than former Military Intelligence chief Aharon Haliva — was read into sensitive material, and did nothing. Ashel's public intervention continues a pattern of bereaved family members confronting officials over October 7 accountability. Earlier this month, Ashel interrupted a speech by Minister Bezalel Smotrich at a Gaza envelope ceremony, and in late June he confronted former NSC head Maj. Gen. (res.) Yaakov Amidror at a security conference, stating his daughter is gone because of Amidror's son. The Zioneer has not independently verified the intelligence officer's current role or the extent of his pre-October 7 knowledge.
