Binyahu Melat, 32, a resident of Havat Gilad and the agricultural coordinator of the community, was killed earlier Friday while defending a group of hikers from a terrorist attack near the Gilad road. He was a member of the community's emergency response team and was shot and killed during the rescue operation. He leaves behind his wife Esther and two daughters.
His brother, settlement activist Eliyahu Melat, responded to the murder, saying: 'My dear brother Binyahu was murdered. Murdered by accursed Palestinian Nazis. And he was murdered also because of us — because we are silent and have become accustomed to being ducks in a shooting gallery.' His words join sharp criticism from the settlement community against the security establishment, which citizens say is not doing enough to eradicate the murderous terrorism.
