01 · THE DISPATCH

Israel's Chief Rabbi Kalman Meir Bar on Wednesday morning eulogized the prominent Netanya kabbalist Rabbi Amos Guata, who was stabbed to death at the entrance to his synagogue earlier in the day.

In a statement released through the Chief Rabbinate, Bar wrote that together with all of Israel, 'I bitterly mourn, with a torn heart, the shocking passing of the righteous kabbalist Rabbi Amos Guata.' He described Guata as 'a unique role model in the city of Netanya, a beacon and a fortified wall for the masses of the city's residents over decades of spiritual leadership.' Bar said Guata 'merited to combine simplicity and mystery, vast and extraordinary knowledge in the secrets of Torah with immense acts of kindness and awe-inspiring divine service.'

The eulogy comes hours after the Shas party announced the sudden passing of Rabbi Guata early Wednesday morning. Police have opened an investigation into the stabbing, and Netanya Mayor Avi Salma eulogized him as 'a great light and pillar of Torah and kindness.' No suspect has been apprehended, and the motive remains under investigation.
