Beijing has warned the U.S. of 'resolute and forceful' countermeasures unless Washington reverses the Pentagon's addition of major Chinese companies to a military-ties blacklist. China's Commerce Ministry issued the statement after the Pentagon this week named Alibaba, Baidu, and BYD to a list of entities deemed to support the People's Liberation Army.
China's Commerce Ministry on Wednesday warned the U.S. of 'resolute and forceful' countermeasures if the Pentagon does not reverse its decision to blacklist some of the country's largest companies. The Pentagon this week added Alibaba, Baidu, and BYD, among others, to a list of entities with alleged ties to the People's Liberation Army, citing China's civil-military integration strategy.
As The Zioneer reported earlier this week, the Pentagon designated more than ten Chinese companies as having military ties, drawing a firm rebuke from Beijing. The warning follows a pattern of growing friction between Washington and Beijing over technology, security, and industrial policy. Separately, the meeting between Taiwanese opposition leader Cheng Li Wun and U.S. National Security Council officials in Washington was abruptly cancelled; no reason was given.
It remains unclear what form any Chinese countermeasures would take or whether the Pentagon list will be revised. Previous rounds of U.S. restrictions on Chinese firms have been met with reciprocal trade actions and diplomatic protests.
