TL;DR

Attorney Ilan Bombach, who represented the coalition before the High Court, said Friday he proposed to everyone he spoke with that the court's ruling be upheld and a new vote for state comptroller be held. The statement, reported in Hebrew media, follows the High Court decision last week annulling the original secret ballot that elected Michael Ravilo.

01 · THE DISPATCH

Coalition attorney Ilan Bombach said Friday that he offered to comply with the High Court of Justice's ruling annulling the election of Michael Ravilo as state comptroller and to hold a new Knesset vote. According to journalist Yaron Avraham, Bombach told the people he spoke with that he made the proposal. The statement, reported by Hebrew media, is the first time a coalition representative has publicly confirmed a willingness to redo the contested selection.

On Thursday, July 2, the High Court annulled the original secret-ballot vote that elected Ravilo, a close associate of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. At 18:18 Jerusalem, The Zioneer reported assessments that Ravilo would comply with the court and request a revote, and that Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana was inclined to refuse such a request. Later that day, opposition leaders Naftali Bennett and Yair Golan criticized the coalition’s handling of the appointment.

Bombach has been the coalition’s lead attorney on the matter. As The Zioneer reported, on June 28 he argued before the High Court that Knesset members may vote openly, and on June 16 he submitted Likud’s legal defense of the original vote, calling the petition an unprecedented step. In a June 18 bulletin, Bombach sharply criticized the opposition’s petition.

It remains unclear whether Bombach’s offer will be accepted by the parties involved, including Ravilo, Speaker Ohana, and coalition leaders. No response to the proposal has been reported.
