Colombia will open an embassy in Jerusalem within two weeks, according to reports in Israeli media. The move makes Colombia the tenth country to host a diplomatic mission in Israel's capital.
The announcement is the culmination of a diplomatic shift under President Abelardo de la Espriella, who took office in August. As The Zioneer reported, de la Espriella's incoming foreign minister informed Israel in July of the plan to open an embassy in Jerusalem. The new government also pledged to withdraw from International Court of Justice proceedings against Israel and close the Palestinian embassy in Bogotá.
Jerusalem has seen a steady increase in foreign embassies in recent months. In June, Somaliland opened its first-ever global embassy in the city, and in July, the Pacific island nation of Nauru announced it would establish an embassy there. The United States relocated its embassy to Jerusalem in 2018, followed by several other countries.
