Shas chairman Aryeh Deri on Wednesday condemned a High Court decision to cancel the state memorial event for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the late spiritual leader of the Sephardic religious community.
In a statement published Wednesday morning, Deri said that "the heart hurts," describing the judges as "insensitive and disconnected from the emotions of masses of Jews." He said the ruling was not a blow to Shas but to a vast traditional and religious public, whose heritage and Torah leaders have again received condescending and discriminatory treatment.
Deri added that the decision strengthens his resolve to "fundamentally reform the justice system and return power to the people and their elected officials."
Deri has previously clashed with the High Court over issues including military draft exemptions for yeshiva students and his own criminal indictment, as The Zioneer has reported.
