The father of Sergeant Ahad Yaari, killed Friday in southern Lebanon in a suspected accidental friendly-fire incident, has publicly called for the immediate release of the soldier who fired the shot and his return to combat. The IDF has not yet commented on the status of the soldier involved. Israeli media reports the father's statement, which was carried by the B'Sheva outlet.
The father of Sergeant Ahad Yaari, who fell in southern Lebanon on Friday, June 6, in a suspected accidental discharge of a firearm by a fellow soldier, has issued a public statement calling for the release of that soldier and his return to combat.
The statement, reported by the B'Sheva outlet and attributed to the father, said: 'The soldier should be released immediately and returned to fighting. The army knows how to draw lessons even without a criminal process. We strengthen the hands of the fighter together with all the fighting comrades, we strengthen the IDF until victory.'
The father's request stands in contrast to standard IDF procedure when a soldier is involved in the death of a comrade, which often includes an investigation and possible legal proceedings. The IDF has not yet confirmed the status of the soldier.
As The Zioneer previously reported in its topic page on Sergeant Yaari, he was a 21-year-old fighter in the Givati Brigade's Shaked Battalion, from Rehovot. He fell in the village of Zoutar al-Sharqiyya.
