Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar will bring a resolution for official Israeli recognition of the Armenian Genocide to the upcoming cabinet meeting, according to an initiative obtained by a journalist. The proposal cites moral and historical duty, and condemns denial. Thirty-two countries have already recognized the genocide.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar plans to bring a cabinet resolution for official Israeli recognition of the Armenian Genocide to the next government meeting, journalist Ariel Kahana (Israel Hayom) reported. The draft resolution states that 'based on moral and historical duty, Israel will recognize the genocide committed against the Armenian people in the late Ottoman Empire.' It further calls for condemning efforts to deny, minimize, or distort the historical truth. The explanatory section details the systematic destruction of the Armenian population beginning in April 1915, including the arrest and liquidation of hundreds of intellectuals in Constantinople, forced labor and murder of men, and death marches of women, children, and the elderly into the Syrian desert, resulting in approximately 1.5 million deaths. The initiative notes that 32 countries have thus far recognized the Armenian Genocide through parliamentary decisions, legislation, or official declarations. The resolution is also expected to be brought before the Knesset for approval. The proposal represents a direct diplomatic confrontation with Turkey's President Erdogan, who has led an institutional campaign of denial.
