The remains of Simeon Leib and Rebecca Herzl, grandparents of Theodor Herzl, were exhumed Wednesday from the Jewish cemetery in Zemun, Belgrade. The World Zionist Organization, which led the four-year diplomatic effort, said the remains will be flown to Israel and reburied at Mount Herzl next week.
The exhumation, carried out under local religious and legal guidelines, was attended by World Zionist Organization chairman Yaakov Hagoel, deputy Yizhar Hess, ZAKA officials, and Foreign Ministry representatives. The remains were transferred to designated coffins for the flight to Israel. The operation concludes a four-year diplomatic effort led by the WZO to obtain all necessary approvals. Theodor Herzl's own remains were brought to Israel and reinterred on Mount Herzl in 1949, 45 years after his death.
