Israel's High Court of Justice, during today's hearing on petitions against the appointment, reportedly proposed to cancel the appointment of Yehuda Eliyahu as director of the Israel Land Authority and return the decision to the search committee, according to a Ynet report.
The High Court of Justice, during its Sunday afternoon hearing on petitions against the appointment of Yehuda Eliyahu as director of the Israel Land Authority (Rami), reportedly proposed to cancel the appointment and return the matter to the search committee, according to a Ynet report. The proposal, if adopted, would effectively nullify the appointment process that has been embroiled in controversy since its announcement.
The court convened earlier today (Sunday, 06:44 Jerusalem) to hear the petitions, as The Zioneer reported. The hearing followed a conditional order issued on June 17 (Wed 15:44 Jerusalem) requiring the state to explain why the appointment should not be annulled. On June 28 (Sun 21:52 Jerusalem), Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara informed the court that she would not defend the appointment, citing 'a multitude of defects in the search and appointment process.' Separately, dozens of local council heads had urged the court earlier today not to cancel the appointment.
As The Zioneer reported on June 22, the Attorney General's office had already signaled its intention to recommend disqualification of the appointment, citing ties between a search committee member and the Housing Ministry. The government subsequently secured separate external legal representation for the state's position, with attorney Doron Taubman handling the case.
The court's reported proposal is not a final ruling. The state is expected to respond, and the search committee would need to reconvene if the appointment is annulled. The High Court has not yet issued a formal decision.
