Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Sunday's meeting with the US is a follow-up session on implementing the memorandum of understanding. He stated that the US has not managed to secure a ceasefire in Lebanon and that this issue will be central in the talks, along with oil-sale permits and unfreezing frozen assets, according to Iranian state media.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaie said Sunday that the meeting between Iranian and US delegations today in Islamabad is a continuation of discussions on implementing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) originally signed on June 12, 2026. According to Baghaie, the US has not succeeded in ensuring a ceasefire in Lebanon, and that issue will be at the center of the talks. Additional items include permitting Iranian oil sales and unfreezing frozen assets.
As The Zioneer has reported over the past ten days, Iran has repeatedly pressed for US enforcement of a Lebanon ceasefire as a central pillar of the MoU. Earlier statements by Baghaie on June 15 and June 20 warned that all understandings are at risk if the US does not compel Israel to stop operations in Lebanon. Sunday's framing positions the Lebanon ceasefire and economic relief as inseparable negotiation tracks.
The spokesman did not address the nuclear file, which Iran has said will be discussed in separate talks within 60 days of the MoU's signing. No details have been released on the composition of the delegations or the expected duration of Sunday's session.
