Iran: US must enforce Israeli compliance with agreement; 60-day nuclear talks set

TL;DR

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Baghaie said Monday that ending the war in Lebanon is inseparable from the overall agreement and that the US must ensure Israeli compliance, warning that non-implementation will lead to Iranian countermeasures. He added that the nuclear issue was not included in the memorandum of understanding and will be discussed in talks with the US within 60 days of signing.

01 · THE DISPATCH

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaie on Monday provided the clearest linkage yet between a potential U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding and the war in Lebanon, asserting that 'ending the war in Lebanon is an inseparable part of the understandings to end the war. Lebanon is mentioned three times in the memorandum of understanding.'

Baghaie placed the onus on Washington to enforce the accord on Israel, saying 'the United States is the one that must ensure the Zionist regime complies with the understandings. Failure to implement the understandings will lead to cessation of their implementation on our part.' The statement reflects Tehran's escalating public-narrative campaign — as The Zioneer reported earlier Monday at 15:03 and 15:23 Jerusalem — to tie any regional deal explicitly to an end to Israeli operations in Lebanon.

On the nuclear file, Baghaie confirmed that the agreement does not address the nuclear issue in detail. 'It was agreed that within 60 days of signing, talks will take place between Iran and the United States on the nuclear issue and the removal of sanctions,' he said. Iran's state news agency IRNA has previously described those talks as covering the civilian nuclear program, sanctions relief, and a compensation mechanism.

Baghaie added that Iran has no trust in either Israel or the United States, and that failure to meet commitments would naturally lead to retaliatory steps by Tehran. The comments come amid a sustained thread of Iranian demands that any accord must include Lebanon — a position Tehran has articulated through Araghchi, the Foreign Ministry, and state media over the past week.
