Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Sunday that negotiations on the final agreement cannot begin until five defined articles of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) are implemented, particularly Article 1, which he stated requires ending the war on all fronts including Lebanon. Talks are being held in Switzerland today to monitor compliance, the spokesperson said, according to Israeli media reports.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaie said Sunday that the meeting underway in Switzerland is intended to monitor implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tehran and Washington. Baghaie stressed that according to Article 13 of the MoU, opening talks on a final agreement is conditional on the implementation of Articles 1, 4, 5, 10, and 11 — with Article 1 defined as ending the war on all fronts including Lebanon.
"Without implementing these provisions — and especially Article 1 (ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon) — it will not be possible to move to the stage of negotiations on the final agreement," Baghaie added, as reported by Israeli media.
This is the latest in a series of Iranian statements emphasizing the linkage between the Lebanon front and broader talks. As The Zioneer reported earlier Sunday, Baghaie had already stated in the morning that Article 13 explicitly conditions final deal talks on the fulfillment of five articles. Prior coverage from last week indicated that negotiations were originally scheduled for Friday but were postponed to an unspecified date. The current meeting appears to be the rescheduled dialogue.
