Air defense systems have been activated in the Iranian cities of Tabriz and Hamadan, according to reports. The reason for the activation is not yet clear. The activation follows a pattern of air defense alerts across central and southern Iran over the past 72 hours, as The Zioneer reported.
Reports from Iranian social media channels indicate air defense systems were activated in Tabriz and Hamadan at approximately midnight local time. This is the latest in a multi-day wave of air defense activations across Iran, which has included alerts in Yazd, Tehran, Qom, Fars province, and Isfahan over the past 72 hours.
Earlier today at 21:15 UTC, The Zioneer reported similar activations in Fars province. An hour prior to that, reports emerged of drones over Isfahan prompting defensive measures. On June 9, air defense systems were activated in Tehran with four explosions reported; on June 8, alerts were reported in Yazd.
The pattern of activations coincides with heightened US-Iran military tensions, including the deployment of a second B-52H strategic bomber to the region and prior Iranian missile attacks on US bases in the Gulf. The specific threat prompting the Tabriz and Hamadan activations is not yet known, and no official confirmation from Iranian authorities has been received.
