Iran (Islamic Republic)
The Islamic Republic of Iran is a regional power and the primary strategic adversary of the State of Israel. Since early 2026, the regime has transitioned from its traditional reliance on regional proxies to direct kinetic warfare with Israel, characterized by large-scale ballistic missile salvos and direct Israeli retaliatory strikes on Iranian sovereign territory.
The Islamic Republic of Iran serves as the strategic core of the 'Axis of Resistance,' a network of armed groups including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, designed to encircle Israel. Historically, Tehran operated through these proxies to maintain plausible deniability while projecting power. However, June 2026 marked a definitive shift in this doctrine toward direct state-on-state confrontation. On June 7-8, 2026, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the regular army (Artesh) launched 'Operation Nasr' (Victory), a massive ballistic missile barrage targeting central and northern Israel, including Jerusalem and Samaria. This escalation triggered alerts in hundreds of locations and was reportedly dedicated to those killed in the ongoing regional conflict. In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted 'Operation Roaring Lion,' a series of precision strikes targeting strategic military and industrial sites across Iran. These strikes hit facilities in Isfahan, Tabriz, and the Karun Mahshahr petrochemical complex in Khuzestan Province—a critical node in the regime's industrial economy used for producing ballistic missile components. The IAF utilized advanced air-launched ballistic missiles (ALBMs) to dismantle Iranian air defense arrays in the western and central parts of the country. By the afternoon of June 8, reports emerged of a potential strategic pause. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a temporary cessation of hostilities following a reported request from U.S. President Trump to avoid further escalation. Despite this pause, the Iranian regime remains in a state of high alert, having suspended all civilian flights and reportedly closed the Strait of Hormuz. Internal stability has also come into question, with unverified reports from Iran International suggesting a breakdown in command-and-control and a loss of contact with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Tehran continues to issue threats, linking the cessation of its direct strikes to a demand for the end of Israeli operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
