An Israeli citizen residing in Los Angeles was arrested on suspicion of running a massive fraud scheme that exploited the personal and medical information of deceased people, according to i24NEWS. The suspect allegedly used the proceeds to fund a lavish lifestyle, including a Rolls-Royce valued at half a million dollars.
Oren David Shahar, 59, a resident of Los Angeles, was arrested on suspicion of acquiring the personal and medical records of deceased individuals from funeral homes and filing fraudulent legal claims in their names, i24NEWS reported Wednesday afternoon. The fraud scheme generated millions of dollars, which Shahar allegedly used to finance a luxurious lifestyle, including a Rolls-Royce worth approximately $500,000.
Earlier Wednesday, as The Zioneer reported, Shahar was charged in a separate federal indictment with defrauding Medicare of $27 million using the same method — paying funeral home employees for deceased persons' details and forging medical records. The combined allegations paint a picture of a systematic multi-year fraud targeting both private legal claims and public health insurance.
Authorities have not disclosed which funeral homes or states were involved in the identity theft. Shahar is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court; the accusations remain allegations at this stage.
