Haim Levinson, a journalist for Haaretz, announced Thursday that he has applied to volunteer with the Tel Aviv police's emergency response squad (kitat konenut). In a post on X, Levinson wrote that since October 7 he had been thinking about how he could contribute more to society, and decided to follow the example of his late father, a police officer. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir welcomed the application, saying 'Welcome, Levinson!' and noting that some 14,000 volunteers currently serve in over 1,000 such squads across Israel. He added that the Tel Aviv squad has an excellent commander whom he knows personally. Police emergency squads—civilian volunteer groups operating under police command—have expanded significantly since the October 7 attacks, with thousands joining to bolster local security. Levinson's application is pending approval.
