Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided not to hold new elections for state comptroller, and the position will be filled only after the next general elections, according to a report by News 14 citing journalist Moti Kastel.
As The Zioneer reported earlier this month, the state comptroller appointment has been a political flashpoint. On July 2, MK Tally Gotliv (Likud) stated that the Knesset would not hold new elections for the post following a High Court ruling that annulled the previous vote. On July 8, journalist Michael Simshoni reported that Prime Minister Netanyahu was leaning toward promoting new elections, against the wishes of senior Likud members. Now, in a first publication by News 14, journalist Moti Kastel reports that Netanyahu has finalized a decision not to hold new elections for state comptroller, and the position will be filled only after the next general elections. The report does not specify the timing of those elections. The decision appears to resolve the internal debate, at least for now, leaving the comptroller position vacant until after the next Knesset is formed.
