DC Councilmember Janeese Lewis George emerged victorious from Tuesday's Democratic primary for mayor of Washington, DC, according to N12 journalist Asaf Rozentzweig. Early results showed Lewis George with more than 50% of the vote, making her the frontrunner to lead the nation's capital.
Lewis George, 38, is a progressive Democrat who has harshly criticized the Israeli government and labeled Israel's military campaign in Gaza as genocide. She has also pledged to protect the District's autonomy and resist the Trump administration. She is expected to face little opposition in the heavily Democratic city in November's general election, potentially ending the tenure of longtime incumbent Mayor Muriel Bowser.
As The Zioneer reported earlier this week, Lewis George's lead in the primary was already apparent. The result remains based on a single journalist's report and has not yet been formally certified by election authorities.
