TL;DR

A rabbinical court held an unusual hearing via Zoom with the children's Muslim father, who is incarcerated, and after he consented, approved the formal return of his three children to Judaism. The mother, a Jewish Israeli who had been in a difficult relationship with the father for nearly 20 years, approached the Yad L'Achim organization for help, which assisted in divorce proceedings and her own return to Judaism; she and the children eventually sought the father's permission, which he granted.

01 · THE DISPATCH

A rabbinical court approved the return to Judaism of three children of a Jewish mother and a Muslim father after the father, currently serving a prison sentence, consented during a rare Zoom hearing.

The mother, identified only by the pseudonym 'Galit,' told the Zioneer she met her husband nearly 20 years ago. She described years of a difficult, complex relationship and several attempts to leave the home, each time returning after the man promised to change. She said that after he was sentenced to prison she mustered the courage to end the relationship and contacted the Yad L'Achim organization, which helped her initiate divorce proceedings and her own return to Judaism — a step she said she had not dared take before.

The children also sought to formally return to Judaism but required their father's consent. After the mother's pleas and the children's requests, the father agreed, and the rabbinical court confirmed the decision.

As The Zioneer previously reported, Yad L'Achim has conducted similar rescues of Jewish women and children from Palestinian areas in Judea and Samaria, including a high-risk operation in a Palestinian village earlier this year.
