Russia has closed the German consulate in St. Petersburg and prohibited the activities of the German Goethe Institute in the country, according to The Zioneer. The moves come after Berlin shut down the Russian consulate in Bonn last week and accused Moscow of involvement in a drone incident at Leipzig Airport.
The Zioneer reported at 17:01 that Russia had announced the closure of the German consulate in St. Petersburg, in retaliation for Germany's closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn last week. Berlin had also accused Moscow of involvement in a drone incident at Leipzig Airport. A subsequent report at 17:19 adds that Russia has additionally banned the Goethe Institute, Germany's flagship cultural organization, from operating in the country. The Goethe Institute has branches in several Russian cities, including Moscow and St. Petersburg. Details on the timing of the ban's implementation or the institute's response are not yet available.
