Sami Gemayel, a senior Lebanese Christian parliamentarian and member of the Kataeb party, warned that the US-Iran memorandum of understanding has nothing to do with Lebanon and serves only to protect Iran's proxy Hezbollah, which he said is ruining the country, according to Israel Today.
Sami Gemayel, a leading figure in Lebanon's Christian Kataeb party, on Monday warned that the emerging US-Iran understanding would not bring peace to Lebanon as long as Hezbollah remains armed on Lebanese soil. Speaking to Israel Today, Gemayel said the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Washington and Tehran is designed to protect Iran's interests and its proxy in Lebanon, not to free the country. 'The land will not be free, the displaced will not return to their homes, and we will not live in peace, as long as the weapons of the militias are on our land,' he stated. His remarks align with a growing chorus of Lebanese leaders — including Prime Minister Najib Salam and President Joseph Aoun — who have publicly rejected Iran's role in Lebanon and the continued presence of Hezbollah's weapons. As The Zioneer reported on June 16, Hezbollah deputy Mahmoud Qamati described the MOU as a 'large door' for de-escalation in Lebanon, highlighting the sharp internal divide over the deal. The MOU is expected to be signed electronically as early as this week.
